The pages nothing links to, and the links that should exist

Two jobs. Find the pages nothing on your site links to, and propose the links that should exist between the pages you already have, each one an exact phrase from the page it would sit on.

What it does

Orphan pages, from the real link graph

The audit crawl records every internal link it follows, then lists the pages with no inbound link from anywhere else on the site. Your homepage is excluded, since the crawl enters there, and so is any URL that answered with an error, because telling you to link harder to a 404 is not advice.

It refuses to guess when it cannot see

A site whose navigation is drawn by JavaScript hands a crawler no links at all, and every page then looks orphaned. So the pass does not run on a truncated crawl, on a site whose link graph came back empty, or on one where any page arrived as an empty shell. You get told the graph was unreadable.

Link suggestions with the anchor already written

For each page it reads, it proposes at most three links to other pages of yours. The anchor is an exact phrase already in that page's copy, so there is a place to put it, and each suggestion carries the sentence around it and a relevance score. An unscored suggestion says unscored rather than showing a zero.

Anchor text you would not want indexed

A scan of a page reports its internal and external link counts, unique internal targets and average anchor length, and flags the two anchors that carry no meaning: the generic ones (click here, read more, learn more, here, link) and the ones with no text at all. Every link is recorded with where it sits: navigation, sidebar, footer or body copy.

How it works

  1. 1

Run an audit on the site

The crawl builds the internal link graph as it goes. That graph is what makes the orphan list possible, and it is what tells you when the graph is not readable.

  2. 2

    Ask for suggestions

Forty source pages per run, each read against every other page on the site as a possible target. Runs advance through the site, so the second run covers pages the first did not.

  3. 3

    Apply or ignore, in bulk

Each suggestion copies out as a ready anchor tag for you to paste into the page, then gets marked applied or ignored. Select several and mark them together. An orphan that gains an inbound link is closed by the next crawl on its own.
